Into the Shadows: Understanding the Sitra Achra and the Nature of Evil
[The Sitra Achra] is actually a part of this world. It is the lowest extremity of this world of our known reality. Were there an independent world of Sitra Achra, it would be beyond amendment and redemption.
In the tradition of the Kabbalah, there exists a concept known as the Sitra Achra (סִטְרָא אָחֳרָא), an Aramaic term that translates to "the Other Side" or "the Other Realm."
The Sitra Achra represents the shadowy, hidden aspect of reality, often associated with darkness, chaos, the demonic¹, "Satan"², and the forces of evil.
While the Sitra Achra is shrouded in mystery, delving into the depths of this concept will provide profound insights into the nature of our existence, the paradoxical utility of evil, and the inner dimensions of the human psyche.
The War for Holiness
In Kabbalistic cosmology, the universe is believed to consist of two opposing forces: the Sitra D'Kedusha, (Side of Holiness) and the Sitra Achra (the Other side).
These two realms are in constant tension, representing the everpresent struggle between good and evil - light and darkness. While the Sitra D'Kedusha is associated with optimal Divine flow and harmony with the Creator, the Sitra Achra is characterized by disorder, impurity, and spiritual obstruction.
In a personified sense, the Sitra Achra seeks to actively undermine holiness and prevent humanity from achieving its goals.
In essence, anything that is not done with pure intentions for holiness is subject to the Sitra Achra. For example, if we give money with selfish intentions, we have provided energy for the Sitra Achra to bring havoc into our world.
When we commit sinful or selfish acts, to a commensrate degree, we inadvertently partner with this force, thereby strengthening the evil in our world.
Understanding the Nature of Evil in Creation
This brings into focus the paradox of how and why the forces of evil exist in G_D's creation. If it is an accident, we're all in trouble. But, if there is some intended, temporary purpose, we will benefit from deeper understanding.
